Emergo Train System (ETS) instructors in Italy have in several years used ETS for simulating mass casualty incidents at airports.

The photos below are from an exercise held 2019 at the training center of Bologna Airport. Scenario was a plane crash (Airbus A380) about 3 km from the airport.

The main objective was to assess the response capability in an accident involving a large plane. The scenario included 297 patients from the ETS victim banks. The exercise continued with the patient’s admission to hospital and triage and management at the Emergency department.

During the exercise triage was measured and evaluated. In pre-hospital setting, START triage was used. 92.59% of the patients had correct triage, 3.71% was under-triaged and 3.70% over-triaged.

Triage in-hospital (with FAST) had the results: 87.88% correct, 7.07 under-triage and 5.05% over-triage.
